THE MIDWEEK UPDATE

Vol. 12, No. 1; Thursday, Sept. 2, 2010

HUNTERS IN PIERRE AREA SHOULD BE HAPPY

There should be pheasants aplenty in the Pierre area this fall. According to the recent pheasant brood survey done by the state Game, Fish and Parks Department, there is an average of 13.95 birds per mile in the Pierre area. That is up from the 2009 number of 11.48 pheasants per mile. The 10-year average is 6.96 pheasants per mile.

Pierre’s 2010 per mile number is second statewide, trailing only Chamberlain which had 17 pheasants per mile.

Overall statewide, the survey showed an average of 6.45 pheasants per mile. That is up slightly from the 6.26 birds per mile last year and the 10-year average of 5.71 birds. (News courtesy of "Today's KCCR News.")

'FLOWER POWER' FUND-RAISER UNDER WAY

A fund-raiser for the Pierre Area BackPack Program called "Flower Power" is now under way through Sept. 24. Orders for tulips, daffodils, lilies, amaryllises and other flowering bulbs and plants will be shipped directly to your home in time to plant for spring blooms.

Orders can be placed at Pierre Area Referral Service, 2520 E. Franklin, or at Oahe Federal Credit Union.

The BackPack program will receive 50% of each sale with those proceeds used to purchase food for the program. Your support will help fill the hunger gap that many of our community's children face over weekends when they have no school lunch program food available.

Last year the program provided food for between 250 and 300 grade school children (pre-K through grade 5) each week of the school year.

MURPHY'S LAWS #2

Law of the Theater and the Hockey Arena: At any event the people whose seats are furthest from the aisle always arrive last. They are the ones who will leave their seats several times to go for food, beer or the toilet and who leave before the end of the performance or before the game is over. The folks in the aisle seats come early, never move once, have long, gangly legs or big bellies and stay to the bitter end. The aisle people also are very surly folk.

Right now Dana is still taking registrations for the 600 spots open to bicyclists in the 13th annual Mickelson Trail Trek. There has to be a limit of 600 riders so there are enough volunteers and accommodations available to make the trek enjoyable to participants. To register go online to www.mickelsontrail.com and follow the "Trail Trek" link. Last year there were 578 riders, including participants from 23 states, Canada, Australia and Austria. Riders cover 109 miles of the trail over three days from Friday through Sunday, Sept. 17-19. The $170 registration fee includes the trail pass, shuttle service, refreshments and some meals during each day's ride. Riders are responsible for their own accommodations and mechanical support. The ride is open to all bicyclists who are at least 14 years of age.

Stephanie (Collison) and Ryan Thier, who live on a farm near Rushmore, Minn., are the parents of a third child. Their daughter, Stella Jean, was born Aug. 19, weighing 7 pounds, 7 ounces. She joins son Ryker, 2, and daughter Lucy, 1, in the Thier family. The maternal grandparents are Scott and Jean Collison of Fort Pierre.

A status statement on Facebook by their dad, Terry Hipple, reveals that all four of his and Cindy's sons are back inside the borders of the United States. Ryan is back from his overseas tour of active duty, Jayme is a freshman at USD, Eric is attending Lake Area Tech and Justin is in Sioux Falls working for ZuercherTech.

Tracy Shangreaux would like to wish her son Jordan a happy 21st birthday tomorrow (Friday)!

Carly Heard, Matt's wife, who had been working for the Vermillion Chamber of Commerce, is now in a new position as assistant director of student services at USD.

SPC. Dustin Maier of Onida is now on active duty in Afghanistan with the 452nd OD CO Army Reserve of Aberdeen, the same unit with which his dad, Marty, served overseas. (News courtesy of The Onida Watchman.)

USD alumni will be interested to know there is yet another new stoplight on Cherry Street, this one at the law school intersection where foot traffic from the huge new parking lots near Coyote Village and the DakotaDome will be able to cross the highway to reach the main campus.

Mikal Kern reports he has a first-year teaching classload of seventh grade geography, 10th grade world history, 11th grade U.S. history, 12th grade psychology and 12th grade government at Wyndmere High School in North Dakota. He is also one of the senior class advisers, and he will be head girls basketball coach.

Tyler Bonnett, who has been in the San Francisco Bay area as he seeks employment, reported in a Facebook message Monday night that he had "just landed a job flying Cirruses out of North Las Vegas."

The Pierre-Fort Pierre Rotary Club was honored as this past weekend’s Rotary District meeting as the fourth place winner in the 43-club Rotary District for its fund-raising efforts for the Rotary Foundation in 2009-2010. The Pierre-Fort Pierre Rotary Foundation raised $134.20 per member for the Rotary Foundation. Also at the club’s weekly meeting Monday, member Bob Jeffries of Fort Pierre was honored as the club’s latest Paul Harris Fellow, which is the highest level of Rotary Foundation for Rotary International. The Harris Fellow program is awarded in appreciation of “tangible and significant assistance given for the furtherance of better understanding and friendly relations among peoples of the world." Jeffries’ brother, Ron, who is a member of the Rapid City Rotary Club, was part of Monday’s ceremony. Ron Jeffries mentioned his brother’s involvement in community efforts such as helping provide temporary homes for more than 200 foster children with eventually four of the children becoming adoptive children. USD alumni will be interested to know that the university's marching band has a new name and a new logo. No longer the Marching Coyotes, the USD band will now be known as "The Sound of USD," and the "u" in the word "Sound" will be the familiar "U." synonymous with USD. The band has doubled in size over last fall. OK, so we're not yet the Pride of the Dakotas in size, but we're working on it! The USD band heads to Minneapolis at the end of next week to play at the Coyotes' game against the Gophers at TCF Bank Stadium. I'm trying to think of any Pierre students in the marching band down here; and I'd also like to hear from somebody at SDSU as to who from the Pierre area is in the Pride this fall!

Not much "people news" this week except for that which I uncovered myself. It may be a holiday weekend coming up, but that's no reason you can't send me your news---where are you in school, in what are you majoring, with whom are you rooming, and all that, plus reunions, weddings, engagements, births, promotions, etc. The 2,000+ readers of the Update want to know about you!

There's a new "Johnny Cash" in the Pierre area. Johnathan Cash Mehlhaff was born in the wee hours of the morning on Aug. 26 to Mike and Terri (Vandersnick) Mehlhaff Jr. He weighed 7 pounds, 16 ounces, and measured 18 3/4 inches. The baby wasn't due till Sept. 3, and Terri had been preparing for her new job as an early childhood special education teacher. She went in for a doctor's appointment on Aug. 24, and the doctor decided he should keep her overnight. The next morning Terri began having back labor, which continued all day. By midnight and later the doctor decided it was time for the baby to be born. Mike and Terri stayed up all night till 5:30 a.m. with their new son till they couldn't stay awake any longer. After all, Terri hadn't been asleep for more than 24 hours! Congratulations to the Mehlhaffs!

Marty Calkins, Stanley County and SDSU grad who has been teaching in Thailand, will be finishing his teaching experience in that country on Sept. 30. Then he plans to travel to Malaysia for about two weeks, then fly to Calcutta to spend some time in northern India. Then he will be off to Nepal to do a trek on the Annapuran Circuit in the Himalayas. He also plans to do some whitewater rafting, then return to India to visit the Taj Mahal, then fly from Delhi to Chicago on Nov. 19. He says the teaching in Asia has been a great experience, he will miss Thailand and he has made some great friends there, but he is ready to get home, see his family and friends and spend the upcoming holiday season at home.

Little Eli Welch Okawa, infant son of Eddie and Reina (Okawa) Welch, has met Minnesota Twins "royalty," but he is too young to realize it. At Target Field for the Twins-Detroit game last night, Eddie, Reina and little Eli were with Eddie's cousin, Ryan Parker Knox. They had standing-room tickets, so they could roam the place, seeing the game from different viewpoints. At one stop they bumped into none other than Tony Oliva, who took time to speak with baby Eli.

Jenna Feiler ('10), a freshman at USD, has already auditioned for and been selected for the USD Chamber Singers, the elite vocal group at the university. The 32-member Chamber Singers will have their annual retreat this weekend at the UCC church in Vermillion, learning five pieces of music in something like 36 hours, then perform at the church's service Sunday morning. Jenna is one of the four second-sopranos in the group.

A KITTEN YOU ALL NEED TO KNOW

Perhaps many of you saw on Facebook the story of Oogy, the dog who had been used as a "bait dog" and badly mangled and mutilated by other animals but who had been befriended by a family and restored to health through their love.

Now our own Dr. Erin Brown, who is a veterinarian in Rapid City, shares the story of a kitten whose name is now Dakota. Erin first saw him when he came to the animal emergency clinic in Rapid City and was known as Survivor. He was caught in a hay mower and is missing all or part of three of his limbs. He managed to walk on his one good leg and the parts of the other two for more than a week before he found help. Thanks to the help of another Pierre gal, Adria Johnson, Dakota is now down at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Utah.

This link should take you to Dakota's story:

PIERRE YOUNG PROFESSIONALS LIVE AGAIN

An organization designed to get young people involved in the Pierre community is back. Pierre Young Professionals has been rejuvenated as a committee of the Pierre Chamber of Commerce.

The group was first organized about three years ago with great fanfare and then slowly dwindled in numbers and visibility. But new committee chairman Jason Dodson says the group is needed as a way to get young people involved in the community and prepare them to eventually be the community’s future leaders.

While Dodson is a long-time Pierre resident, group vice president Jessica Stange just moved to Pierre about two years ago. She says the group will not only be a chance to meet more people but also an opportunity to participate in community and professional development projects.

A kick-off event for the group is Sept. 9 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Steamboat Park Amphitheater. There is no charge to attend. That will be followed by an after-party at the Post 8 American Legion cabin.

Chamber CEO Laura Schoen Carbonneau says having the group as a chamber committee allows the chamber staff to take care of the administrative duties for the group. Officials stress that people of all ages are invited to be part of the group. For more information on the group, check out the group’s Facebook page or send an email to contact@pierreyoungprofessionals.com (News courtesy of "Today's KCCR News.")

COLLEGE SPORTS ROUNDUP

South Dakota Tech football (Andy Smith, Brian Kemnitz, John Ziadat): Opening Night for the Hardrockers is Saturday night at 6 p.m. MDT at Butte against Montana Tech. Andy spent the summer in Rapid City, kicking and running to improve his leg strength. He was a "walk-on" three games into his freshman season two years ago and last fall became the first Tech player to earn All-American honors. Now a junior, he has been named to the Fred Mitchell Award watch list as one of 40 kickers from FCS, Division II, Division III and NAIA schools so named. The kickers are recognized for their performance on the field and in the community.

South Dakota Tech volleyball (Paige Corcoran): The Lady Hardrockers open their season in Butte, Mont., at the same time the football team is out there. The volleyballers will play Montana State-Northern and Rocky Mountain on Friday and Montana-Western and Montana Tech on Saturday. Paige, who is a senior this year, and two juniors were picked by their coach as captains of the Hardrocker team. Because Tech is about to begin the transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II, this fall will be the last season Tech teams are eligible for postseason competition until 2014.

Dakota Wesleyan men's soccer (Dane Hagen, Austin Munyon, Eric Christianson): The Tigers will open their season in a road match at Jamestown this Saturday, and the home opener is next Wednesday at 5:30 against Grace University of Omaha.

Dakota Wesleyan women's soccer (Linsey Peterson, Yutzil Rodriguez, Amanda Slama): DWU opened the season last Thursday at Iowa Lakes and Friday at Augustana. The Tigers lost the match at Augie, 3-1, after taking a 1-0 lead. Yutzil (sophomore transfer from USD) and Linsey (freshman) both were in the starting lineup for DWU. Next on the schedule is the home opener at 5 p.m. today against Northern and a trip to Jamestown Saturday.

Black Hills State volleyball (Kylee Lamb): Five matches in California opened the Yellowjackets' season last week. They lost to Hope International 3-1 (Kylee four games, 10 kills, one assist, one dig); lost to San Diego Christian 3-1 (four games, 11 kills, two digs, three blocked shots); lost to Azusa Pacific 3-0 (three games, six kills); lost to The Master's College 3-0 (three games, six kills) and lost to Biola 3-0 (three games, four kills). This weekend in Orange City, Iowa, BHSU will play Lee and Oklahoma Baptist on Friday and Briar Cliff and Dakota Wesleyan on Saturday.

Black Hills State football (Devin Rounds, Josh Breske): The Yellowjackets open their season in Des Moines at 1 p.m. Saturday against Grandview. Devin is a sophomore kicker, and although I thought Josh graduated last spring, the roster on the BHSU website lists him as a senior offensive lineman.

Dakota State volleyball (Mandi Atkins): Mandi is a freshman libero for the Lady Trojans, who open their season in Des Moines. DSU will play Midland Lutheran and Grandview on Friday and Evangel (Mo.) and McKendree (Ill.) on Saturday. Next Tuesday DSU goes to Mount Marty in Yankton.

PARKER'S CAPITAL JOURNAL COLUMN

As I obeyed the stop sign adjacent to Vermillion's Austin Elementary School the other day, there unfolded before my eyes a tableaux that likely occurred a million times from coast to coast.

A little girl in a pretty pink outfit stood in front of the flagpole, backpack in hand, as her mom stood a few feet away, focusing her camera. Farther back stood Dad, patiently waiting. (Hey, at least he was there!) It obviously was the first day of school for their little princess.

When one gets to be my age, the number of first days of school I can remember begins to dwindle. But one of the first which always comes to mind was in the fall of 1992 when son Jason enrolled at SDSU and one of his best buddies, Tim Schmidt, went along with us to help move in. If it hadn't been for Tim, we would still be there, trying to build that dratted loft. (When the instructions said, "Assembly required," they weren't just a-kidding.)

I remember the sadness, on the part of both student and teacher, when our kindergarten son Ryan left the grade school in Onida and legendary teacher Ida Bartels' loving hug as we prepared to move to Pierre in the middle of the school year.

When our girls arrived at junior high age (grade 7 in those days), I fondly remember (because it was I who took the photo!) when they and 12 of their best friends assembled on the morning of the first day of school on our front lawn on Prospect. I guess there was safety in numbers, so that pack of 14 wanted to enter that new phase of their school lives together, for mutual support if not for fun.

Our house was closer to the junior high than anybody else's house, so it was the natural gathering place. Now as I gaze at that photo once again, I think to myself, my, how young they looked, not only Heather and Holly but also Susan, Nicole, Melissa, Briana, Betsy, Jessi, Amy, Chelsea, Jennifer, Jocelyn, Meghann and Tessa.

When our twins had started kindergarten in the fall of 1984, we made sure it was a day their first teacher, Kay Huxford, would never forget. I know the date was Aug. 31 because we sent along cupcakes. It was also the girls' birthday, so Mrs. Huxford, bless her heart, not only had the first full day with a room full of kindergarten kids to contend with but a birthday party as well!

Now next Tuesday, 26 years to the day, Heather's little guy Dylan (my favorite grandson) will begin kindergarten at his school in Rapid City on his mom's birthday. I'm certain I will see a photo of the occasion within seconds of his passing through the school doors, thanks to modern technology, just as I did when his cousin Olivia first went to Sunset Terrace Elementary School in Rochester two years ago.

I do remember my own very first day of school in Onida in September 1945 as my mom escorted me up the long sidewalk to that old grade school building that stood in the center of its block and into Vera Wagner's first-grade classroom. And I recall first days of school at Huron College and at several locations in my teaching career.

But hey! I had my latest first-day-of-school moment just this week! Thanks to Laurie Brown, the music department secretary at USD, I have my own locker this year, a place to stash each vocal student's notebook of music, my coat, my lunch, and whatever else fits in there. Working the lock combination on Monday was an exciting moment, you see, because I've never had a school locker in my life---not in grade school, nor in high school, nor in college. Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks!

Here in Vermillion we'll welcome a new flood of incoming freshmen tomorrow, an influx taking place about this time at all the other campuses as well. I'm glad to know that a great delegation from Pierre will be among the ones becoming Coyotes this weekend.

I don't know the author who composed the following list, but one of those e-mails that people continue to pass from one to another around the world listed some things the typical college freshman will have learned before his tenure at school is even one semester old, such as:

That no matter how late you schedule your first class, you will still sleep through it.

That you can love a lot of people in a lot of different ways.

That each clock on campus shows a different time.

That if you were smart in high school, so what?

That you can know everything and fail a test.

That you can know nothing and ace a test.

That having a final exam one day is no excuse for not attending a party the night before.

That most of your education will be learned outside of class.

That there is somebody on your campus who will find you a lot more interesting, attractive and fun to be around than anybody in your high school class ever did.

That your parents will believe you only so often when you say "I spent the whole evening in the library."

That you are one of those people your parents warned you about.

That Sundays are a figment of the world's imagination.

That your parents are gradually becoming smarter as time goes along.

That you have come to know the pizza boy on a first-name basis.

That looking out the dorm window is a form of entertainment.

That WalMart has become such a cool store.

That everybody on your floor will think your mother is the coolest mom around when you get a box full of homemade cookies.

That you would rather clean than study.

That your whites don't turn out nearly so white when you do your own laundry as when Mom does it.

That you are starting to think and sound like your roommate.

That friends are what make college worthwhile.

So best wishes to each student, no matter the grade level, as the new year begins. In the words of Dr. Seuss, "Be your name Buxbaum or Bixby or Bray or Mordecai Ali Van Allen O'Shea, you're off to great places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting, so get on your way!"

PEOPLE NEWS

Two South Dakota State Historical Society interns, both from Pierre, now have their own exhibit at the South Dakota Cultural Heritage Center. Terra Burley and Kirby Mammenga have spent their summer helping to document and preserve items in the society’s collection. Now the two interns have selected some of their favorite artifacts for a new exhibit called “Our Interns’ Picks.” Burley, who is a junior fines arts major at Northern State University in Aberdeen, selected such items as a pair of fancy shoes worn by Della Bagby as a child at her family homestead in Sully County during the 1870s and boots worn by Howard Kennedy, who was a World War II prisoner of war in Poland. Mammenga, a junior secondary history educational major at Black Hills State University in Spearfish, picked items such as a 1950s toy microscope and science kit and a “Queen’s Lace” pattern pitcher and cup set from 1888-1898. The interns’ exhibit is in the museum gallery’s entrance and runs through at least September. (News courtesy of "Today's KCCR News.")

The correct name of Shad and Brandy Ludemann's new baby girl is Alex Avery Ludemann, not the name we incorrectly listed in last week's Update.

Torri (Ice) Lechtenberg, who is in her final year at Nebraska-Kearney, just began her semester of student teaching in Holdrege, Neb. She is working on her physical science (grades 7-12) endorsement, so she will be teaching physical science, chemistry and physics. At the same time she is taking a graduate course this semester. Incidentally, in response to my column item last week about getting excited to see Hughes County license plates, Torri said she is the same way. She saw a "36" plate on I-80 in Nebraska a couple weeks ago and was disappointed she didn't know who was in the car. She was happy to see their "Go, Govs" decal in the window, however!

Nick Kruse, who earned his undergraduate degree at Dakota State in Madison, has achieved an assistantship in the physical education, exercise and wellness (PXW) department at the University of North Dakota. Nick will be working with a new professor on campus, collecting data, running interviews, running stat analysis and other duties part-time while attending graduate school. Nick will be meeting with the professor this week to discuss plans further and start the interview process.

Karissa Guthrie of Pierre is the Avera/Austad's Junior Golfer of the Year in South Dakota in the girls' 12-13 age division.

Our sincere sympathy to Bishop David and LaDonna Zellmer, their children and grandchildren and all the rest of the Zellmer family. Bishop Zellmer's mother, Ila Zellmer, passed away in Sioux City at the age of 77 on Aug. 17. Among her other survivors are her husband, Rev. Bruce Zellmer of Sioux City; two other sons, Rev. Daniel Zellmer in Texas and Dr. Timothy Zellmer in Montana; a daughter, Cynthia Weber in Sioux City; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. After visitation and a prayer service in Sioux City Sunday, funeral services were held in Mitchell Monday.

Isn't it great news that these days there seem to be more of our military men and women coming home out of harm's way instead of heading overseas into harm's way! One of those who will be home soon is Dan Schumacher, who says he should be home to his wife, Alissa (Harter) Schumacher, in Brookings sometime in mid-September. Dan said they have already begun doing some gear-packing in preparation for the long trip home to this side of the world.

Jacob Shoup, who completed his undergraduate years at the University of Sioux Falls last spring, has been in Flandreau for the past month, getting his classroom ready for the beginning of his teaching career. He spent his birthday last Thursday in teachers' meetings all day at the high school there, and students arrived for the first time this past Monday. Besides his classroom work, Jacob will be coaching the freshman boys' basketball team this coming winter and assisting with the Fliers varsity team. He is feeling soccer withdrawal right now as he knows his USF soccer team is practicing and beginning its season, his first fall without soccer in probably a decade at least! So he is looking forward to the basketball season.

Kyle Kafka and his wife Jeannie of Pierre are expecting their second child, according to an announcement on Facebook last week.

It's hard to beat the news Dana Gloe posted on her Facebook page last Friday. Her son, Ryan Nuttall, had received results of his PET scan, and his cancer is gone though he will continue to have follow-up tests every two months. Now their families can look ahead to Ryan's wedding on Sept. 18.

Former Riggs High teacher/coach Geoff Gross, who left Pierre to return to his alma mater, Mitchell High School, as athletic director, has been, because of his position there, deeply involved in the renovation of ancient old Joe Quintal Field. The Mitchell football stadium will now have the amount of seating on the south (visitors') side alone as it once had in the entire stadium.

Kyle Weaver, who has been working as an automobile salesman in Sioux Falls for some time, reports he began classes in landscaping at Southeast Technical Institute there on Aug. 16.

Torry Zeller can still beat just about anybody in a road race. Torry had the overall fastest time of 16:34 in the Linda LaFave-Sandau Memorial 5K Run held during the Sully County Fair in Onida. He also won his 31-40 age group. Among the other men's age group winners were these Pierre runners---13-20, Aaron Propst, 18:06; 21-30, Jesse Monroe, 17:21; 51-60, Al Arendt, 22-25; 61+, Dick Pibal, 23:27. Among the other Pierre names we noticed on the entry list were Jebben Keyes, Leon Blumhardt, Tyler Propst and Dan Propst.

Cindy (Ryan) and Brent Reilly welcomed their baby girl, Remington Elizabeth, on Aug. 9. She weighed 4 pounds, 7 ounces, and was 17 inches long. She came into the world eight weeks early and remains in the NICU at Sanford at this time, but Mom and baby are doing well. The Reillys hope she will be able to go home within the next month or so.

You would think if the temperature soared past 100 degrees, it would set a record. But not in Pierre on Sunday. The temperature, as expected, hit triple digits, ending with a high of 104. But that was not good enough for a record, missing the 105 mark set in 1960. Last year’s high temperature on the same day was 83. The wind was also howling in Pierre on Sunday, making for a blast-furnace effect that kept a lot of people indoors. (News courtesy of "Today's KCCR News.")

Riggs High boys and girls golf coach John Knox won his fourth flight at the South Dakota Golf Association's senior men's championship in Yankton over the weekend with a pair of 77s for a 154 total. Among other players representing Hillsview Golf Course, Lou Mendoza was seventh in the first flight with a 148, Joseph Villa tied for third in the fourth flight with a 157, and Jim Ulmen was 18thg in the seventh flight with a 195 score.

USD student Nic Lohman, who has worked several summers in Alaska during his college years, is remaining in that state into the fall and plans to return to USD in time for the second semester this coming school year.

Kara Marks of Pierre and Joey Stahl of Onida are among the returning members of the ADMIT Club, the admissions office's student ambassadors at Mount Marty College.

Andy Hanson, who is in chiropractic school in Dallas, was working out at a gymnasium there recently when a representative for Nutri-Concepts spotted his well-put-together frame and asked him if he wanted to pose for photos (and be paid for it) to be used by the company in marketing its C3X formula. Andy agreed, the photos have been taken, and you might be seeing a shirtless Andy in stores such as GNC in the near future. The company's website at www.nutri-concepts.com might have the photos available, too.

Lucas Scheibe is another who is currently serving at Kabul, Afghanistan. He too is one of the South Dakota Army National Guardsmen on active duty. He runs his own combat outpost, and Lucas said this week "it's an interesting gig for a guy like me, but I truly enjoy what I do."

Aaron Rumpca, after graduating from SDSU a year ago last spring, has now completed his first of four years of dental school at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He recently passed his first set of national boards, so three years to go! Meanwhile, an easier classload this fall will mean plenty of time for Husker football and hopefully a trip to a BCS bowl game in January!

Save the afternoon of Saturday, Sept. 4, at 3 p.m. at Hilger's Gulch for rugby! The Great Plains Rugby Football Union (GPRFU) will have its all-star challenge match in Pierre between last year's league champions, Northern State, and the GPRFU All-Stars. Admission is free. Let's hope those rugby guys don't have one of our 108-degree summer afternoons!

If you have watched the addition to Faith Lutheran Church rise from the ground and wondered what it's like inside, here is your chance! The people up at Faith will host an open house from 3 to 5 p.m. this Sunday, Aug. 29, welcoming everyone for visiting, refreshments, tours of their new facilities and music by the Jim Szana Trio. Hard to beat that combination!

Congratulations to our newest first-time parents. Matt and Amy (Tate) Mancuso are the parents of a son, Jace Avery Mancuso, who was born Tuesday, Aug. 24. He weighed 8 pounds, 12 ounces, and measured 19 inches.

Jeremy and Penny Ripperger and family still live in the Fargo-Moorhead area where Rip is director of client relations for Northwestern Mutual in the Fargo area and Penny is public affairs officer for the North Dakota Air National Guard. Their son Jarret is about to start first grade, and their daughter Jordyn had her first birthday on Aug. 14. The Rippergers celebrated their ninth anniversary last week. They are looking forward eagerly to a weekend trip to Orlando and Disney World in mid-September, and they will be taking along Jeremy's sister, Shelby, who is 15.

Ryan Parker Knox will be one of the quartet members in "Forever Plaid" at the Paul Bunyan Playhouse in Bemidji, Minn., next summer. The show dates there will be July 6-16.

Michele Hoscheid's senior year at Black Hills State is beginning, but she is in Rapid City instead of Spearfish. Actually she is still in her elementary methods class this fall and won't student-teach till spring, but she has been placed at Knollwood Elementary School in Rapid City for most of the school year in a first-grade classroom. She is a double major (elementary and special ed), so she will have to student-teach at Rapid Valley Elementary in the spring semester for her special education major. Michele also works on the side as one of the game operations interns for the Rapid City Rush hockey team, and there's nothing more exciting than that sport in Rapid City these days. The Rush won the CHL championship last season and will not only defend their title this upcoming winter but also host the league's all-star game in January.

FOOTBALL CONTEST COMING

It wouldn't be fall and the Midweek Update without a weekly football contest. This year's starts next week in the Update. Each week we select five games, and you who choose to participate e-mail back to me with your five winners. Then we see who has the best scores each week. By participating you win fame and fortune. On second thought, you win only the fame of being recognized in the Update; you win no fortune whatsoever. Watch for the contest next week.

And if you are a "friend" of mine on Facebook, we're going to do a weekly football contest on there, too, so watch for my "status report" that lists five games each week, and simply "comment" with your five winners. Somehow or other, I'll try to keep track of each participant's score. Obviously I don't have enough to do around here.

WORDS OF WISDOM

Procrastination is the fault most people put off correcting.

PARKER'S COLUMN IN THE CUSTER CHRONICLE

(Editor's note: Almost all of you Midweek Update readers know none of the Custer kids mentioned below, but some of them had interesting thoughts to which you can relate nevertheless. If you aren't interested, fine; stop reading now!)

Custer High School's Class of 2005 was the first group of local teen-agers I had the pleasure of knowing when I joined the Chronicle staff back in January of that year. In observance of the fifth anniversary of that acquaintance---and I suspect it was much more momentous for me than it was for them!---I contacted as many of the '05 seniors as I could find on Facebook and elsewhere last spring.

As I am accustomed to doing, I asked them some questions, and I heard back from 10 of them! So they are the lucky 10 who will receive mention in today's column.

I asked them where they have spent the last five years, what lies ahead for the next five years and what is one thing they have learned about themselves since high school.

"How much I truly love home," said April (Genovese) Johnson. "Now I understand how lucky I am to have grown up in the Black Hills. It's so cliche, but there really is no place like home. It took me a few years to learn and appreciate that!"

April graduated from SDSU in four years with a B.S. in athletic training, then passed her boards to become a certified athletic trainer. On a summer trip to Virginia Beach three years ago she met Josh Johnson, and she married the guy last August. He is a youth minister there and also works at a credit union, and April works at a physical therapy and sports performance business while providing training services to sports teams around the Hampton Roads area. April hopes to be accepted into a doctorate of physical therapy program, a degree which will take three more years of study.

Justin Hammer told me the most important thing he has learned about himself is what he enjoys doing. "I have really enjoyed college. I discovered I really enjoy school," he said. "More specifically, I really enjoy learning about the past."

Justin earned his undergraduate degree in anthropology and history at Wyoming, and now he has finished his first of two years toward his graduate degree in history at USD. This summer he is working as a Forest Service archaeologist, and he and classmate Katie Carson were married last Saturday. Justin hopes to find a permanent job as a historian or an archaeologist after completing his degree next May.

Austin Bishop, who married Becky King of Hastings, Minn., two weeks ago, will be the ag program and FFA teacher at Selby starting this fall. He has spent the past five years at SDSU, changing his major four times before setting on agricultural education.

"I have learned that my values and morals are staying the same as the foundation that my parents set for me," Austin said. "I also have learned that friends are the ones who will come, no matter the situation."

Whitney Griffin said that limiting what she has learned since CHS days to just one thing is difficult, but she settled on this: "I have learned that I can accomplish far more than I ever thought possible. The person I was in high school was only the beginning of who I am today, and I'm sure I'll say the same thing five years from now."

Whitney has been at Montana State-Bozeman, majoring in business with an accounting option. This spring she finished her master of professional accountancy. As a break in the summers from her academic rigors, Whitney worked at the Purple Pie Place in Custer several times, but last summer she worked for an accounting firm in Anchorage.

For the next five years Whitney eyes working for a public accounting firm but also seeing the world and picking up skiing and other outdoor activities. "I promise you," she added. "Accounting is not as boring as many people seem to think it is!"

Andy Ford says he has learned that nothing comes easy, especially an engineering degree, and that hard work definitely pays off. Andy started college at Bozeman, transferred to the School of Mines in fall 2006 and has been there since. He will graduate in December. A workshop with Daktronics taught him a lot about what lies ahead in the working world. He also did an internship with Halliburton last summer and has been back with them this summer in Grand Junction, Colo.

He anticipates finding a job doing something he enjoys "or at least something I can tolerate." But he wants it to be a place where he will have opportunities to expand his knowledge and grow as an individual.

Donny Lynch says he learned in these past five years something current high school kids should probably take to heart---"the choices you make in high school follow you through life." Donny earned an associate degree in the welding tech field and has been working for a local business as its welder. In the next five years he hopes to be able to buy his own house and perhaps secure a state job.

Jen Steever said she feels as if she just graduated from CHS the other day, but she already has her college degree. Jen went first to BHSU but transferred to Wyoming for the next four and earned her B.S. in nursing. For four summers she has worked as a wildland firefighter with the Forest Service "One could not ask for a better summer job," she exclaimed.

Jen will start work next month in the progressive care unit at Wyoming Medical Center in Casper, but she plans to take photography classes at the same time.

"The one thing I have learned about myself is to not be afraid of what lies ahead," Jen said. "Someone very close to me said, 'If nothing ever changed, there would be no butterflies,' and that quote has helped me grow as a person."

John Fischer's advice, based on what he has learned since CHS days, is to "never be afraid of living or working in new places, even if it seems intimidating at first." John has been at Nebraska-Lincoln studying music education for five years. He spent part of a summer working at an outdoor adventure camp in the Rockeis, and one summer he established a music program at a Job Corps center in rural Arkansas. He had the chance to travel with his students to several spots in the southern U.S.

He graduated from UN-L last December and did substitute teaching in the Lincoln schools until May. Now he has begun a two-year stint working for the Fellowship of Catholic University Students as a campus missionary, after which he anticipates a career in education or some form of social service working with young people.

"I have learned that anything is possible in life," said Megan Young. "I never thought I could move away from home." But she has been in Colorado for three years after two years at BHSU. She is currently returning to college and looks forward to a career as an elementary teacher.

And then there is Steven Young, who didn't need many words to tell me what he has learned about himself in five years---"enjoy the little things."

Steve has been in the U.S. Marines since high school. To say he has done his share would be an understatement. He has been to Iraq three times, seven months each the first two times and three months the last time. Now he is aboard a ship headed to Japan on a seven-month tour. He says three of the next five years will be spent in the Marine Corps. "Then I'll be a bum," he says facetiously.

Thanks to the '05 grads who responded. It was good to catch up on their lives. They always impressed me as a group who were going to go places and do great things. Thanks to them for the memories!

THAT LIST OF WEDDINGS IS GROWING!

After my recent column about my difficulty in remembering all the weddings for which I have played piano or organ, I have received several responses (and reminders!) so my list of weddings has grown to 36. I know there have been more than that, however!

In skimming through some old Midweek Updates this week, I came across a pair of interesting wedding-related items:

(1) It was just 10 years ago that Mandy Weaver married Eric Sprenkle at Lutheran Memorial. At that time I wrote the following in the Update, and the experience still brings back a smile: "I've been to exciting weddings and boring ones, colorful ones and drab ones, weddings with wonderful music and weddings with dreadful music. But after hundreds of weddings, I'm sure I never had a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes until Kyle Weaver sang at his sister's wedding last Saturday night. Amanda and Eric had just lit their unity candle and turned around to wait for Kyle to finish his song. As they stood there, looking at him, tears were rolling down Mandy's cheeks, and some of the bridesmaids were crying, too. You have to know what the week had been like. At the beginning of the week, something happened to Kyle's tonsils---a rupture, somebody called it---and he was hospitalized. At first it was thought he might not be discharged even to attend the wedding. As it happened, they kept him overnight and let him out the next day. But still, it was doubtful he cuold sing. Well, friends, he sang as he has never sung before, first "The Wedding Song" then the less familiar "Amazed." And it was the most magical moment in a wedding that I can ever remember."

(2) And then another Midweek Update item about Jeremy Ripperger's wedding to his wife Penny in Moorhead reminded me of what they did at the reception: "Since Penny dislikes that tradition of reception guests tinkling their cups and glasses to persuade the newlyweds to kiss, she had printed messages on each table saying they would NOT kiss until a person or a group stood up and sang a song containing the word "love." Several did, and it was quite fun actually. One baudy group at a table in the back sang that song you all know from the 'Top Gun' movie, 'I've got that lovin' feeling . . .'"

Any more wedding memories to refresh my own fading memory? I'm in the mood to receive them!

RAWLINS LIBRARY TO START FUND-RAISING DRIVE

Pierre's Rawlins Library plans to start a $2 million fund-raising effort next month to raise money for the expansion of the library.

Librarian Beverly Lewis says plans are being made for a special kickoff event to be held sometime in September for the fund-raising event. No date for the kickoff has been set, but Lewis says a committee will lead the fund-raising drive.

For several years, the library has wanted to add on to its building, which was opened in the early 1970s. The library currently has 15,800 square feet, and the expansion would add another 10,000 square feet. Total cost of the project is expected to be $2.2-$2.3 million.

Lewis says she believes the local citizens will help the library reach its goal.

Last year, the library received both city funds to do a study about the need for an expansion and also a Community Development Block grant for eventual construction. In the proposed 2011 city budget, the library is requesting $200,000 for an architect to do designs for the proposed expansion. The city commission has not yet acted upon that request. COWAN WITHDRAWS FROM LEGISLATIVE RACE

This fall’s four candidate Dist. 24 state House race is now down to three candidates.

Secretary of State Chris Nelson says Democrat Jade Cowan, 22, withdrew from the race last Tuesday, Aug. 3. Nelson says Cowan gave no reason for the withdrawal.

Cowan, a Riggs High School graduate who grew up on a farm north of Pierre, had announced that he would run for the Legislature after graduating from Northern State University this past spring. He had also served as an intern during this year’s legislative session. While Cowan had initially said he was going to campaign this summer, he had not been seen much, if at all, publicly as a candidate.

With Cowan’s withdrawal, that leaves Dr. Jodi Owen as the only Democrat in the race for the two open House seats. Tad Perry and Mark Venner won the June five-person Republican primary to move onto the November general election. (News courtesy of "Today's KCCR News.")

BASEBALL ROUNDUP

Pierre qualified for the state tournament at Mitchell where Post 8 won its opening-round game over Watertown, 6-5. Nolan Merrill had three hits and three RBIs for Post 8. Kris Hewlett added two singles. Cichos pitched a 10-hitter, allowing two earned runs, striking out five and walking none. In amateur baseball the Pierre Rattlers whipped Mitchell, 16-4, in its opening game of the Northeast Regional. Pierre lost to Brookings Cubby's, 6-3, but scored a 10-inning 6-5 win over Castlewood to qualify for the state "A" tournament.

In the first round at Yankton, the Rattlers lost to the defending state champion Renner Monarchs, 1-0. Allen Goodman held the Monarchs to one run while allowing seven hits and striking out five, but the only run of the game scored for Renner on a double in the fourth. No Pierre baserunner got past second base.

In the next round, however, the Rattlers stayed alive and moved on to the "final six" at Sioux Falls this coming weekend with a 15-0 trouncing of the Rapid City Black Sox. Dalton Decker pitched four innings in the 105-degree heat and humidity, giving up only two hits while fanning four. Dom Wieseler, a pickup player from Watertown, pitched the rest of the way. Jason Livermont had three hits, Decker and Adam Deneke two hits each and Tyson Lindekugel and Brian Graves two doubles apiece.

The Rattlers will play the Vermillion Red Sox at noon Friday. The tournament is now single-elimination. If they win, the Rattlers would play Yankton or Brandon Valley at 11 a.m. Saturday, then would play at 5 p.m. Saturday to get to Sunday's noon state championship game.

On Sept. 11 Ryan Parker Knox ('94) is participating in a 10K Mud Run, a military training-style obstacle-course benefit to raise funds to fight multiple sclerosis. He hopes friends in Pierre and fellow former students at Riggs will contribute toward his fund-raising effort. His team is calling themselves "SupercalifragilisticexpialSclerosis." Actually the fund-raising deadline passed on Aug. 6, but I think they will take donations, no matter how small. Three weeks ago or thereabouts, Heather Mangan posted an update on her Peace Corps training in the African nation of Niger. She has been living in the capital city of Niamey with "a really sweet and understanding" family that includes a riotous but fun 4-year-old girl. Heather said she sleeps outdoors most nights and has found bucket baths to be wonderful. Once she gets to her assigned post, her water situation may change, but she does expect to sleep outside for the next two years. Training has been intense, including six hours of language instruction four days per week. Heather has been studying French, but if her skills are found to be at least intermediate, she will advance to Hausa, a local language. Heather has found the people in her stag (training group) to be wonderful and helpful. They did manage to have time for a fun dance party during a weekend. By the time you read this, Heather may have learned where her post is. She said being away from home is tough, but each day she is reminded why she is there. "I still constantly believe that I was meant to be here," she said.

Jon Kotilnek, who spent the last year after graduating the Marquette law school in Milwaukee, finished his LL.M. in international law. "I'm hoping it's the last degree I seek for awhile!" he said. While he was going to school this past year in Washington, D.C., he was also working for the National Institute of Military Justice. One of their primary focuses is the international legality of the terrorist military commissions that are ongoing at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Jon mostly did legal research in relation to international law and wrote a few reports. However, the climax of his job came in April when he got a once-in-a-life-time opportunity, flying down to Guantanamo and observing first-hand the trials. He watched the trial of Omar Khadr, the Canadian citizen accused of throwing a grenade that killed an American soldier. Jon was there for a week during which time the trial was focusing on whether the statements Khadr gave could be used in court because they were allegedly obtained through torture methods. "Really interesting stuff!" Jon said. While he was there, he learned that his first choice for a spot to be stationed came true---Heidelberg, Germany! He began training July 4 and will finish in mid-November. After a time at home he will report to Germany in early December.

Jerrod and Tracy (Wyly) Henrich of rural Akron, Iowa, welcomed their second son, Kolt Wyly Henrich, on July 13. He was born on the 47th wedding anniversary of his parents, Mack and Karen Wyly of Fort Pierre. Kolt is the 15th grandchild for the Wylys---nine boys and six girls. Kolt joins 4-year-old Hunter in the Henrich family. Hunter spent a few days in Stanley County helping Grandpa Mack harvest wheat after his brother's arrival.

Stephanie Arne has been back at work at Sea World in San Diego since May. She recently learned she would be doing a penguin show a few times each week using emperors, kings, gentoos, rockhoppers and Magellanic penguins. Steph also plans to start writing her first book but is torn between two topics. She is also considering where to travel to in the near future---Australia? France? backpacking through Central America? Decisions, decisions! (Steph also asked if anyone is considering a life change, meaning moving to San Diego. A good friend of hers is moving to France and wants the convenience of selling almost all of his life there---household goods, surfboards, guitar, car, bike, etc. Anybody interested in the whole package can go to http://buymysandiegolife.com for information.

I heard last month from Ben Merrill in Pierre that he and Melanie were expecting a second child to join their 2 1/2-year-old son Carter. Then later came the news that their daughter, Madelyn Grace Merrill, was born on July 20, weighing 7 pounds, 13 ounces, and stretching 20 1/4 inches tall. Meanwhile, Ben continues working with the Bureau of Finance and Management and playing softball and golf and fishing. Ben reports his brother Zach has been at home for the summer but will return to Dakota State in Madison this fall. Their sister, Samantha, and her husband Robert Pietz (he's from Mitchell) still live in Harrisburg and work in Sioux Falls. Samantha has been taking multiple positions as a dental hygienist and continuing her education. Ben's paternal grandparents, Larry and Carol Merrill of Sturgis, formerly of Pierre, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in June. Ben's maternal grandfather, Bob Voeltz, has seen some hospital time so far this yer but recently was released from the hospital and allowed to go home.

Remember last year when Jessica Ahlemeier spent several months on a paragliding trip across Canada, raising funds to get kids from low-income families to summer camps? She drove a school bus that had been converted into an RV from Vancouver Island to Newfoundland, approximately 10,000 kilometers, and worked as ground support/photographer for powered-paraglider pilot Benjamin Jordan. Kids from schools and summer camps all along their route joined hands for their presentations and aerial formations. By the end of the trip Jordan had claimed the new Guinness World Book of Records title for "longest journey by powered paraglider." Now there is a book of photos and text about the incredible summer adventure. All proceeds from purchases of the book will support summer youth camps. For information go to http://aboveandbeyondcanada.com.

Peg Logan, former elementary principal at McKinley, Washington and Jefferson schools in Pierre, moved recently to a care center in Sheridan, Wyo., to be near her daughter and son-in-law, Barb and Bill Ziegler. Her new address is: Peg Logan, Westview Health Care Center, Room 208, 1990 West Loucks St., Sheridan WY 82801-4500

Since graduating from the University of Mary in Bismarck on May 1 with her mathematics education degree, Erin Titze moved back to Pierre and spent the rest of May as a substitute teacher until the Pierre schools closed for the summer. Then she began her third summer at BankWest in the financial services department. Erin has accepted a teaching job at Bison High School and planned to move out there early this month. School starts Aug. 19 with in-service and classes following on Aug. 23. Erin says she expects to be back in Pierre often since the Bison district has a four-day school week and the community is relatively isolated. She is looking forward to teaching grades 7-12 math. Both brother Eric, who works in Milwaukee where he attended Marquette, and sister Elise, who lives in Colorado, were home for Erin's graduation. Then she had time to join Elise in Colorado for some whitewater rafting through A-1 Wild Water where Elise works.

Sara (Dvorak) Becker ('00) welcomed her husband, 1st Lt. Nathan Becker, U.S. Army, home from Iraq on July 13. The Beckers will welcome their first child, a son, in early October. Baby boy Becker will get a new little cousin a few months later when Sara's older brother Rob ('96) and wife Michelle (Smith) have their fourth child in January. Grandma Gini Grannes says, "Seven grandchildren is heaven, but eight would be really great."

YOUR HELP IS REQUESTED

We will, of course, be following all of the Riggs, Stanley County and Sully Buttes alumni who are participating in college sports this coming school year. We have started compiling a list of those people, but of course we can't remember them all.

If you know of a college athlete (or several), send me his/her name, sport and school to parker_knox@hotmail.com.

PIERRE HITS 100 MARK FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 2007

On Saturday, July 17, for the first time since Sept. 4, 2007, Pierre's temperature soared past 100 degrees. The high was 106, reached at 1:53 p.m. The National Weather Service said Pierre was without a 100-degree or higher day in both 2008 and 2009. That is the first time that has happened since records were first kept starting in 1933.

Pierre usually averages nine days of 100 degrees or higher each summer. The only other year when the temperature didn't hit triple digits was 1993. (News courtesy of "Today's KCCR News.")

Dawson Lewis wrote from Pierre last month that we could happily take his son Michael ('06) off our list of military addresses. As of noon July 10, Michael was no longer an active-duty Marine but is now a former Marine (there are no ex-Marines!). Just a year earlier Michael was involved in the initial invasion of Helmand Province in Afghanistan, so you can imagine how much more enjoyable this July was for the Lewises. Michael left Camp Pendleton, Calif., for the last time on June 17 and began "terminal leave"---you leave and don't return. He and his dad, who had flown to California, drove back together, stopping at Grand Canyon, the Meteorite Center near Flagstaff and the world's largest piece of petrified wood near Joseph City, Ariz. Michael is enrolled at Nebraska-Lincoln where he will start school this month. Friends can find him on Facebook. The Lewises middle son Andrew ('09) is aboard the USS Peleliu somewhere in the Indian Ocean, now three months into a seven-month deployment. As a landing and support specialist, he will spend a lot of time aboard ship, overseeing the loading of equipment and getting it off and on the beach as the infantry trains onshore.

Belated 85th birthday greetings to Harold Ramse whose birthday was July 25. Over the Fourth of July weekend all of his and Darlene's daughters and their families were home in Pierre for a family reunion. It was the first time in over 10 years that all of the girls---Sharon, Vicki, Debra, Denise and Melanie---were home and together at the same time. The family had a dinner at the Cattleman's Club on Friday evening, sat around the Ramkota pool, rode go-carts at the new track, had a boatride on the Capital City Queen and enjoyed a family picnic on Saturday. Family photos were taken at Capitol Lake. In addition to the Ramse girls, their spouses, kids and grandkids joined in the fun.

Brent Chittum ('02) is on his last stretch with the Marine Corps. Oct. 13 will be his end-of-service date. As of now Brent plans to continue his education in Oceanside, Calif., near San Diego, taking advantage of the Post 9/11 GI Bill. He is considering either a history or political science degree, but he is still discussing with a counselor. Brent is also in training for a half-marathon on Sept. 11 and hopes to do the Marine Corps marathon in the next two years. Friends can reach Brent at 2525 Pahvant St., Oceanside CA 92054.

Matt Picchietti, now that his Army service has ended, is "starting life over again" in Bismarck with his wife, Blair (Simon). The Picchiettis are expecting their first child after the first of the new year and were expecting to learn the baby's gender any day now. They have a house which means painting, yard work and all the rest, the civilian sort of things most of us dread but Matt relishes.

Jen (Sprenkle) and Jordan Terveen became first-time parents back on May 19 when their daughter, Nola Averyl, was born. Jen works for the Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce, and Jordan is a computer programmer at Citibank. Meanwhile, Eric and Amanda (Weaver) Sprenkle are celebrating their 10th anniversary today (Aug. 12). Their son, Nate, is 7 and will be entering second grade at Rosa Parks Elementary in Sioux Falls. Their son Zach turned 3 in July and will be going to pre-school this fall. Eric is a mortgage lender for Wells Fargo, and Amanda is a stay-at-home mom, watching not only her own boys but her new niece, Nola, as well.

Reed Ludwig, since completing his active duty, has been working full-time as a mechanic for the South Dakota Army National Guard at Chamberlain since November 2008. He is also a sergeant in the 1742nd Transportation Company headquartered in Sioux Falls and was promoted to that rank just this past April.

Ben Gloe is still in the Army recruiting business in Grand Rapids, Mich., but he is no longer "chasing the numbers," as he described it. He is now responsible for making sure that the people who are sworn into the Army actually ship off to basic training. Ben says he has 14 months remaining on his recruiting assignment in Grand Rapids. His baby daughter, Lilah, is 11 months old already.

Adam Johnson is still overseas on duty in Iraq but not for much longer. When he wrote last week, he said they would be redeploying later that week back to Fort Bragg, N.C., their home duty station. Adam's company (A Company, 2-504 PIR) spent the past 12 months in Ramadi, Iraq, but recently completed their advising mission to the Iraqi Army.

Chad Snodgrass recently returned from an 8-month deployment to the Philippines. He hopes to head to South Dakota around the time of the pheasant season's opening weekend in October.

Zach Erickson is still in the Air Force at Minot Air Force Base, N.D., but he is working on cross-training into a different career field within the Air Force. Zach said he is hoping to go into mental health. He has decided a degree in psychology is what he wants to do, and that career field goes right with that. Zach recently completed all classes needed for his Community College of the Air Force degree. Now he needs only one higher math class to complete his general education for a bachelor's degree.

Josh Hartmann ('09) has now been at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs for a full year. He said last week life as an upperclassman is much preferable to the hazing-prone freshman year. He plans to be home in Pierre for Thanksgiving and Christmas and perhaps for some long weekends in between.

Carly Feiler, who completed her degree at the University of Mary last school year, recently moved to Alaska for this coming school year to teach elementary special education in a little village called Togiak. "It's been a little bit of an adjustment, but the people are great, and the scenery is awesome!" Carly said this week. "I think it will be an interesting and eye-opening year."

Andrew Berreth and the rest of his battalion are back at Fort Bragg, N.C., after their tour of active duty in Iraq. Andrew is an engineer platoon leader in the 1BCT B2AB.

Patrick Gengler, whose first Navy duty assignment after completing basic training last year at Great Lakes, Ill., has been Monterey, Calif., and he will be there for a few more months. Tentative plans have him leaving there the first week of November with a destination of his next location at Fort Meade in Maryland. On the way east he plans to spend three days in the Black Hills and four days in Pierre. "All is going better than I thought possible," Patrick said last week. "But I can't wait to get back to South Dakota and eat a real steak."

After returning from Iraq in late spring, Dallas Cronin is happy to be back home with his family and friends at Malmstrom Air Force Base at Great Falls, Mont. Earlier this summer during the time his daughter Felicity was with the Cronins, they went to Disney World in Florida. "That place brings out the kid in everyone," Dallas commented. "The boys were bouncing off the walls from 7 in the morning until midnight or later, and Felicity was overwhelmed with all the princesses and fairies." They went home via Denver where they spent a couple days with some friends who were formerly stationed at Malmstrom. Shortly after they arrived home, the Cronins were visited by Calyn (Cronin) and Kris Hauck and their three children, who live in Portland, Ore., for a weekend. Dallas' wife Mindy will graduate from Montana State University-Great Falls at the end of the fall semester 2011. Dallas has enrolled and will be starting classes this fall at MSU-Great Falls. Their boys are Chris, 10, who will be starting fifth grade, and Mark, 8, who will be a third grader. Dallas' daughter Felicity lives in Plattsmouth, Neb., and will start second grade. Dallas plans to take Chris on a hunting trip back home to Pierre around Thanksgiving.

Kyle Kafka continues to work full-time for the South Dakota Army National Guard in Pierre. Working with them since August 2008 has taken him to California, Massachusetts, Arkansas, Kentucky and Ohio. Kyle and his wife Jeannie and their three-year-old daughter Brylee Rhyanne live at the Carriage House apartments in Pierre.

SFC Tom Martin and his new bride live in Sturgis where Tom is on active duty orders with the South Dakota Army National Guard at Fort Meade. With the job he has now, he is non-deployable, so he will be in the States for the foreseeable future unless something comes up and he decides to volunteer for a deployment. The Martins are expecting their first child later this year.

Megan Rapp had her two sisters, Anne Rowe and Gretchen Hind, as her matrons of honor at her wedding to J.D. Deal in Pierre on July 30. Other bridesmaids were sister-in-law Lindsey (Riter) Rapp; Danielle Johnson, Megan's roommate during their teaching together in Spearfish and Gillette; and J.D.'s sisters, Dusti Deal and Jaci Gregg. Anne's daughter Isabella was junior bridesmaid. J.D.'s best men were his brothers Heath and Scotty. Other groomsmen were Megan's brother Jon; and friends Boonie Klemann, Wes Spencer and Tyler Stoeser. Jon's son Guy, who was visiting for the summer from his home in Israel, was junior groomsman. Their wedding was held at Lutheran Memorial Church, and the reception and dance were held at the youth center in Fort Pierre.

Riggs High alumnus Nathaniel Gough, who completed his architecture degree at North Dakota State University in Fargo this past spring, is beginning his first out-of-college job, and it is a long way from home! He will be living and working in Singapore!

Surprise Package, the local mixed vocal ensemble, will be performing music during the 8:30 and 11:00 services at First United Methodist Church in Pierre this coming Sunday, Aug. 15. The group will begin singing 10 minutes before each service.

While visiting with so many folks "back home" at the recital performed by USD singers Amanda Rich and Susanne Harmon (Erin's wife) in Pierre Sunday night and while running into others around town over the weekend, these were some of the news items I learned: . . . . . Neil Eichstadt lives in Piedmont and works in Rapid City. His sister Anne and her husband live in Omaha and have a beautiful baby boy 8 months old (and Grandma Gail has photos to prove it!). . . . . . Matt Hall and his wife Kendra are moving to Oshkosh, Wis., after spending all of their married lives up to this point in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Kendra has never known any kind of winter except a Texas winter! Aha! Meanwhile, Jenna Hall has been visiting her parents in Pierre before returning to the northwest corner of Arkansas for another year of teaching. She has taught there every year since graduating from college in that area. Kevin Hall is in Council Bluffs, Neb., working as a paraprofessional in special education classrooms and will be working toward his degree in the special education field. . . . . . One of the twins born to Kevin Lors and his wife last year has had serious health problems this past year but is doing well. Kevin and family moved from Lincoln to Iowa last year (I forget if his mom told me Des Moines or Cedar Rapids!). . . . . . Jamie Driscoll and family live in Bismarck while Troy Driscoll lives in Portland, Ore. . . . . . Larry and Mary Jo Johnson were among those at the recital. They had just been to Aberdeen for Mary Holm's wedding. . . . . . Mary Gen Fjelstad, who lives with her family in Eugene, Ore., while her husband, Kato Buss, is finishing the last year of his Ph.D. degree, is in Pierre visiting her mother, Donna Fjelstad. Her family will be arriving soon. . . . . . Allison Mickelson lives and works in New York City, and Drew Mickelson is working in the welding field in Aberdeen. . . . . . Justin Stephens is also in New York City, but I should have been writing down details on Justin and Allison when I visited with their parents. I'll get more details on what they are doing. . . . . . Nathan Welsh is also still in New York City. His sister Macy lives in Chicago. Brad Christenson is still in Aberdeen, Brian Christenson and his family in Florida and Kathy Christenson in Pierre. . . . . . Father Tom Anderson is serving at St. Joseph's Cathedral in Sioux Falls. . . . . . Kirby Mammenga says he has another 1 1/2 years left toward his history education degree. . . . . . Among the Onida friends who came down for the recital were Marla Mosiman and Doug and Clarie Marsh. The Marshes tell me the interesting news that their daughter Sara will be holding her upcoming wedding on the field at Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, the home of the College World Series which will be destroyed soon.

Roger McKillip completed his tour of active duty in Afghanistan several months ago and is now back in Colorado Springs. Friends can still contact him by e-mail at roger.mckillip@us.army.mil.

Mike Fisher's Pierre 13-14 Teeners placed third at their state tournament last weekend. In pool play they won all three games, 12-2 over Sioux Falls West, 6-1 over Rapid City Blue and 4-2 over Mitchell. In the semifinals they lost to Brookings 2-1, but they rebounded with a vengeance to whip Huron 11-1 in the third-place game.

The Pierre School Board okayed several coaching contracts at their meeting Monday. Scott Neu is the new freshman boys basketball coach while Lisa Kannegieter was named an assistant middle school track/field coach and Michael Shoup an assistant track/field coach for the varsity team. Terry Becker and Scott DeBoer were named strength and conditioning coaches for the fall, and Shawn Schnabel got that position for the spring. Jill Caauwe was officially named as the new competitive cheer head coach. Halli Holden and Sarah Linn will coach the competitive dance squad, and Tina Glissendorf was named the assistant cheerleading adviser. (News courtesy of Dakota Radio Group's "My Daily News.")

It has been a busy season for Houdek, the Twin Cities-based band organized by Pierre natives Tom Valentine and Patrick Baker and their wives. Houdek launched its Dog Days Sale on their debut album, "Return to Houdek," so if anyone would like to buy a copy of the album, now is a good time. Both the CD and MP3 versions are available at a significantly reduced price through the end of August. Check out the information at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/Houdek. The highlight of the summer was performing at high noon in blazing 100-plus temperatures at Jazzfest in Sioux Falls. An e-mail from the band this week called it "guitar-melting heat." There are photos from their performance at http://www.banburycrossprod.com. The band's official website is http://www.houdekmusic.com. Currently on the home page is a preview of the upcoming concert film/documentary, "Return to Houdek: Live at the Grand."

Speaking of bands involving Pierre natives, Dakota Blonde, the successful Denver-based trio that includes Riggs High grad Mary Huckins, is coming home---at least it's Mary's home!---for a concert/fundraiser for the benefit of Pierre Players. They will also be in Pierre to help celebrate the 59th wedding anniversary of Mary's parents, Robert and Bev Huckins. The public concert will be at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 22, at the Grand Opera House. Call the Pierre Players number, 224-7826, to reserve tickets. Each ticket is only an amazing $5, but of course you can contribute more to help Pierre Players. Dakota Blonde will make a stop in Hot Springs on the way to Pierre, performing Aug. 19 at the Wild Burro Bookstore House Concert.

Many of you will remember Duane and Penny Unruh when they were a young couple serving at Community Bible Church in Pierre. Having been in Belgium as missionaries now for many years, they are currently on the six-month return to the United States (they do this every five years or so), and they are calling Pierre "home" during this six-month stay. It was great to see them at the recital the other night, but I see by photos on the wall they have a trio of sons---Austin, who just graduated from high school; Micah and Landon. Their home overseas is at Flanders, Belgium.

Paula (Johnson) Barber is the instigator behind the Beaba Bike Ride, a memorial bicycle ride in memory of Paula's sister, the late Beaba (Johnson) Terca, a member of the Sully Buttes Class of 1976. Bikers will be leaving on the 66-mile route (shorter routes are available!) from Main Street, Onida, at 6:30 a.m. this Friday, Aug. 13. Call Paula at 280-1151 or 258-2708 to pre-register. The $20 fee includes a T-shirt. Water and snacks will be provided. The route will go north on U.S. 83 to the 212 junction, west to Highway 1804, south to Highway 26 and back to Onida. They are accepting relay teams as well as individual riders.

Five years ago last week I interviewed a biker couple after their wedding in the chapel at Custer State Park while I was on the staff at the Custer Chronicle. On their fifth anniversary they were back and stopped in at the Chronicle office to visit with me. Unfortunately I'm not there any longer, but it was a nice gesture on their part. I wish I had been there.

BluntFest will be held Aug. 20-22 in Blunt (where else?!). A parade of lights will be held that Friday night after a chili cookoff. A co-ed softball tournament will be on Saturday at 9 a.m. On Main Street all day Saturday will be a dunk tank, Blunt Jail and flea market. Other activities will be kids' games, a golf cart race and a lawn mower poker run. A community meal will be served Saturday evening. Bands will be featured behind the Blunt Bar and Grill on both Friday and Saturday nights.

TIME CAPSULE SEALED AT STATE CAPITOL

A time capsule to be opened by those using the state Capitol 100 years from now was sealed recently. The white marble time capsule, with the dimensions of 47 inches long by 12 ½ inches wide by 10 ¼ inches high with the cover on, contains numerous items such as books, DVDs, and other publications.

Among the most important items were letters written by Gov. Mike Rounds, who dropped a hand-written note into the capsule, and by Supreme Court Chief Justice David Gilbertson, constitutional officers, state legislative leaders, including State Sen. Bob Gray of Pierre, tribal leaders and members of the state’s Congressional delegation.

The capsule will be located in the east brass display case in the Capitol Rotunda for the next 100 years. The day the capsule was sealed was the anniversary of the actual date when the Capitol was first dedicated, June 30, 1910. (News courtesy of "Today's KCCR News.")

NEW SCULPTURE FINDS A HOME IN PIERRE

For Belinda Ware Lytle, her first attempt at creating a sculpture was not supposed to mean anything. But it has.

Lytle, who is from Rapid City, has created a 40-pound sculpture that has now been entitled “Waiting For My Soldier.” It will honor military families, and Pierre has been chosen as its permanent home.

The sculpture is a bust of a woman, which is supported by the woman’s long flowing hair. When Lytle started working on the sculpture in a class, she had no concept of what it would turn out to be. But Lytle says what the sculpture should mean and whom it should honor came to her over a period of time.

Lytle eventually was connected to Gloria Doohen, who is the wife of Major General Steven Doohen, the Adjutant General of the South Dakota Air and National Guard. Gloria Doohen was instrumental in the creation of the banner project which honors South Dakota soldiers who have died in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Doohen says when she saw the sculpture, she wanted to present it to a Chamber of Commerce as a gift to honor military families. The three Chambers considered were in Pierre, Rapid City and Sioux Falls. Pierre was drawn as the selected city.

Doohen, who has a son serving for the third time in Iraq, says the sculpture is another way to thank military families for their sacrifice.

The sculpture is now being finished and will be presented to Pierre most likely sometime next month. Lytle expects it to be another emotional time.

Pierre Chamber of Commerce CEO Laura Schoen Carbonneau says officials will start discussing where to place the sculpture so the public could see it. (News courtesy of "Today's KCCR News.")

KOESTER EARNS STATEWIDE HONOR

Everybody who has worked with Eunice Koester knows she is more than just a school custodian, and now the rest of the state knows that, too.

Koester, a custodian at Pierre’s Georgia Morse Middle School, has received the Custodian of the Year award given by the Custodial Engineer Association of South Dakota. She is the first Pierre custodian to ever win the award.

Koester, who was honored at Monday night’s Pierre School Board meeting, says she has been surprised by all of the attention.

Koester, who has been at Georgia Morse Middle School for five years, was recommended by several officials within the school district. Mark Hiatt, the head custodian at the middle school, says Koester has always been dependable.

Koester says she never has considered herself just a custodian. She says it has always been the chance to work with the children and the students.

Superintendent Dr. Kelly Glodt and Business Manager Darla Mayer say Koester is a good example of the outstanding staff working in the school district. (News courtesy of "Today's KCCR News.")

PARKER'S COLUMN IN THE CAPITAL JOURNAL 7-16-10

Here they go again: We're accustomed to people elsewhere in the world mispronouncing "Pierre," and the latest Motel 6 commercial featuring their spokesman, Tom Bodett, probably doesn't demand a boycott of that particular motel chain. We can at least send them messages on their website.

Whoever writes the commercials that Bodett reads for Motel 6---you know, "we'll leave the light on for you" and all that---no doubt thought it clever when he came up with the idea for the latest one.

Bodett begins by urging travelers to visit the state capitals. "Go to Lincoln, the capital of Nebraska," he intones, "and Austin, the capital of Texas."

The commercial continues, "And visit South Dakota's capital---uh, uh---I can't ever remember that one."

Later Bodett suddenly "remembers" and declares, "Oh yeah, PEE-AIR. PEE-AIR, South Dakota!"

Cute. But ignorant.

My six-year-old grandson knows that Tallahassee is the capital of Florida and Sacramento is the capital of California, and he can pronounce them both. Funny that adults in the East who write commercials for ad agencies haven't learned all their capitals yet or how to pronounce them.

Good-bye to a legend: Some folks in Pierre will disagree---Rick Merriam, Bill Ellwanger and Ed Welch, among others---but in my estimation there's been little to love over the years about the New York Yankees. I'll exclude Derek Jeter; he's sort of a cool guy.

But I was sad to learn of the death last week of 99-year-old Bob Sheppard, who was the public-address announcer at Yankee Stadium from the early '50s until 2007.

Over the years P.A. announcers have become cheerleaders, entertainers, clowns and downright embarrassments, but Sheppard remained dignified. He knew the role of P.A. announcers is to inform, not to incite crowds into cheering.

Take it from one who has been doing P.A. announcing for nearly 50 years, Sheppard was the gold standard, as opposed to the idiots who sit behind the microphones at NBA games and sound like guys introducing the monkeys at a circus.

They still play a recording of Sheppard's introduction of Jeter every time he comes to bat. That seems like the ultimate tribute to Bob Sheppard.

- o - o - o - o -

Those were the days: I've been hearing that old Hyde Stadium's history is being honored this summer as the baseball season winds down. You who are new to Pierre in the past 20 years don't know about Hyde Stadium the way it used to be back in the golden age of the Basin League and the Pierre Cowboys.

For one thing, the ticket booth was out on the corner of Capitol and Ree, and there was no concession/pressbox building atop the first-base seats. All that was up there was a row of trees, providing shade for the folks who sat up there in their lawn chairs. Gordon Stout, the "father" of the Cowboys and the Basin League, was always there. Remember Dorothy Kelly (her sister Edith was the founder of the Hollywood Shop)? She was always there, too.

And Gerry Robbins, who wrote a regular column in the Capital Journal, was always puttering around the ballpark, gathering information on the collegiate players and their visiting families from all over the country.

We Onida folks were always well represented at a Cowboys game---Earl and Clarissa Hardwick always sat over in the grandstand. Art and Julia Johnson and their girls, and we Knoxes always chose the first-base seats although I don't remember their being chair seats in those years---perhaps just benches with backrests.

The Bus Walseths, the St. Clair Smiths, the Hirrschoffs---those are some of the Pierre people we knew who always sat in their same locations. And then there were the Kirley brothers (Joe's dad and uncle). That crusty old pair of Stanley County ranchers were notoriously hard on umpires and visiting managers. Harry Wise was a tall, lanky visiting manager (was it Winner or Yankton where he managed?) who delighted in infuriating Pierre fans.

I've been trying to remember where the concession stand was in those years. There surely was one, but I don't recall its location. I think the only scoreboard was a manually-operated one somewhere out behind left field.

But Hyde Stadium was our baseball heaven. Coming to Pierre for a Cowboys game was a special summertime treat about 30 times each summer for many years. Does anybody else out there remember Harry Messick? Bill Davis? Dirkes Rolston? Don Montgomery and his blistering double that won our first Basin League pennant over Valentine?

I became P.A. announcer for the Pierre Cowboys (my dream job in those years!) and performed such duty out of the "pressbox" which hung from the roof of the main grandstand. The place was reachable only by walking out onto the grandstand roof and then climbing down into the box. There was room for four or five people at the most. Tony Dean broadcast games for KCCR back in his early years in Pierre from the west end of the box. Jim Thompson did so later. And on a couple of occasions even I got to broadcast baseball on the radio from out of that box!

Happy anniversary, Hyde Stadium. You hold special memories for me every time I drive by!

PEOPLE NEWS

In addition to those we mentioned two weeks ago, Colin Whitebird also achieved recognition on the spring semester Dean's List at the University of South Dakota.

Augustana senior Bethany Jochim of Pierre has been named a Rossing Physics Scholar for 2010-2011. Jochim, a physics major, will receive a $10,000 scholarship from the Thomas D. Rossing Fund for Physics Education Endowment within the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) Foundation. The fund is named for Dr. Thomas Rossing, an accomplished physics scholar who chose to support the study of physics at schools affiliated with the ELCA by providing scholarships and other financial aid to exemplary physics students. This summer Bethany is working at the J.R. Macdonald Laboratory as part of the National Science Foundation's Research Experience for Undergraduates Program. She is studying the interaction of intense ultraviolet laser pulses with molecular ions. At Augustana Bethany also serves as vice president of the Augustana Chapter of the Society of Physics Students and is a member of the Augustana Band. She is the daughter of Loretta and Michael Jochim of Pierre.

Maria Tracy ('06) graduated from South Dakota State with a 4.0 grade-point average in nutritional science. This fall she will be attending medical school at USD where she received two prestigious scholarships.

Riggs High sports schedules for 2010-11 can be accessed at www.pierre.k12.sd.us. Click on "Governor Sports," then click on "Athletic Calendar" or "Sports Schedules."

The Dean's List at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley for this past spring included Jenna Goehring.

Ryan Knox, who has been at Paul Bunyan Playhouse in Bemidji, Minn., for more than a month, finishes the second of his two plays up there this weekend when the 10-day run of "Bram Stoker's Dracula" concludes Saturday night. Ryan was first cast as Picasso in "Picasso at the Lapin Agile." The review of the play in the local newspaper stated, "Picasso gets supremely energetic treatment from Knox."

Local students who received degrees at the spring commencement at Black Hills State included Sarah Ramirez, Lori Gloe, Deanna Turney, Colton Nye, Lane Warner (summa cum laude), Emily Asher (magna cum laude), Amanda Brown, Jim Costello, Sam Holden, Kyle Hollingsworth, Peter Mickelson, Katie Nelson, Michael Roberts, and Nicole Stasch (magna cum laude).

Linda (Matzen) Aaker, who has been English teacher and debate coach at Riggs High for the past three years, will teach beginning this fall at Sully Buttes High School in Onida where she lives.

It was a pleasure for your editor to see Bob Lowery on Tuesday at a funeral luncheon in Vermillion. The funeral service was for long-time Vermillion High football coach Ron Brown, who died last weekend in a local nursing home. Bob said he and Diane are happy two of their kids are making their homes in Pierre---Brandon and his family and Brittany and her husband. Meanwhile, Brian continues to teach and coach in Aberdeen while Brad is now in Denver.

I also chatted briefly with Jerry and Corrine Wulf at the Vermillion Community Theatre's opening night of "Oklahoma!" last Friday. Their son Andrew, a graduate student at Nebraska-Lincoln, played in the pit orchestra. At another performance of the show I visited with Bill and Phyllis Zimmerman from Pierre. They were down to see the show with their son Paul of Sioux Falls. Paul's daughter, who lives in Vermillion, was in the cast.

The spring semester Dean's List at USD included Holly Bonnichsen, Will Mortenson, Seth Parsons, Kirsten Wilcox, Holly Heien, Katie Hutchinson, Amanda Sieck, Alexis Yackley, Ainsley Askew, Matt Blake, Alecia (Johnson) Bowers, Jared Bowers, Nathan Chicoine, Kyle Cichos, Ericka Deneke, Nicole Douglas, Amanda Hettinger, Cassandra Heuer, Laura Hofer, Anthony Hunt, Kara Kracht, Alli Lindbloom, Ashlee Novak, Nikki Novak, Tane Owens, Renee Rodgers, John Rounds, Chris Smith, Tim Steece, Miranda Tracy, Jacob Wagner, and Amelia Wulf.

Pierre tennis players did well at this year's Capital City Open, keeping eight championships at home. Connor Forney won the boys 18 singles, beating Anthony Sierra, Sioux Falls, in the finals 6-0, 6-1. Bethany Goeden won the women's open singles, topping Charmaine Ree, Huron, 10-5. John Forney and Doug Stevens won the men's open doubles in a round-robin format by beating both of the other teams. Polly Gill and Bethany Goeden won the women's open doubles, triumphing over Dummermuth and Ree of Sioux Falls/Huron, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. Connor Forney and Bethany Goeden won the mixed open doubles over Knigge and Ree of Huron, 6-1, 6-3. In the men's 7.0 doubles Jim Wegner and Dennis Winters were the champions, topping Clement and Moore of Rapid City. Lori Wilbur and Paige Wilbur won the women's 7.0 doubles over Celeste Gageby and Carmen Schwartzkopf of Pierre 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. John and Connor Forney won the men's 9.0 doubles over Hans Leong and Jared Smith of Pierre 6-2, 6-2.

Aaron Denton and his wife Ashley, who live in Irvine, Calif., became first-time parents on July 7. Their son, Brydon Mitchell Denton, was born that day, weighing 7 pounds, 14 ounces, and measuring 20 inches. His grandmother, Jean Denton, predicts he is destined for greatness because the earth literally shook when he was born---during a southern California earthquake!

Shalista (Wendt) Anderson is moving her photography business to Sioux Falls. Her last day of business in Pierre will be Sept. 1. For information write her at info@shalista.com.

Reid and Leah LeBeau of Champlin, Minn., became parents of a third son when Owen Henry LeBeau was born June 30 at Coon Rapids Mercy Hospital. Owen joins a pair of older brothers in the LeBeau family. Rhett will be 4 years old on July 21, and Luke will be 18 months old on July 25.

This is the weekend that Houdek, the band founded by Pierre natives Patrick Baker and Tom Valentine, plays at the Jazzfest in Sioux Falls. They are slated for a Saturday noon performance at the mammoth event, which attracts something like 90,000 people each year. PARKER'S COLUMN IN THE CAPITAL JOURNAL

'You can go anywhere from here'---and she has!

Shelbi Hostler has proved to be a perfect example of South Dakota State University alumni who have participated in that school's "You can go anywhere from here" promotional campaign over the years.

How about from a river bank in central South Dakota to a mountaintop in Hawaii!

Shelbi, the daughter of John and Judi Hostler of Blunt, remembers family camping trips many years ago when she and her dad would sit out under the dark skies, away from the distracting lights in town, and gaze at the stars, looking for satellites, shooting stars and constellations.

Look to where that has led! Now Shelbi has a degree in astrophysics and works at a world-class observatory with Nobel laureates and with astronomers from around the world. You can indeed go anywhere from here.

When she was still a student at Sully Buttes High School (Class of '95) and wrestling between physics and history as a potential college major, Shelbi, though she had always loved history, was still drawn to the sciences.

"Astronomy had always been on my wish list, so I decided that, if I really wanted to try it, physics was the way to go," she said.

She graduated from SDSU with a bachelor's degree in engineering physics with minors in math and history in 2000 and completed a master's in science astrophysics at Iowa State in 2004.

So far her path had gone from Blunt (and the banks of the Missouri) to Brookings to Ames. But how did she get to Hawaii for her first job out of college? "A little bit of luck and fate, to be honest," Shelbi admits.

In the fall of her final year of graduate school, she casually joked at a weekly luncheon of her research group, "Maybe I'll just move to Hawaii and work at a hotel."

A few days later she found a note on her desk from a member of her group who had been examining an astronomy job posting site online. "It's not a hotel, but it is Hawaii," Shelbi's friend wrote on the listing for a telescope operator on Mauna Kea, a dormant volcano on Hawaii's big island.

An application, a telephone interview, a job offer!

After defending her master's thesis in the spring of 2004, she made the move from the Midwest to Hawaii.

The job title was astrophysicist, and the position was telescope operator/observing assistant. The Submillimeter Array (SMA), Shelbi tried to explain to this sciences-illiterate writer, is a radio interferometer located near the summit of Mauna Kea at an altitude of nearly 14,000 feet.

Her main duties were to go to the site 10 nights per month and run the telescope for scientific observations or engineering tests. Five times monthnly she had to prime the array---set up the telescope for that night's observations and make sure everything was running properly and ready for the operators to arrive.

The rest of her time was spent in the base office at Hilo, updating documentation, working on calibration data for the telescope, familiarizing herself with the science they were doing, and doing public outreach.

Shelbi, after two years, was promoted to head operator and became the public outreach director for the SMA in Hilo, organizing its involvement in local, national and international outreach activities. She was also in charge of training new Hilo-based operators and the SMA's second-shift operators based in Cambridge, Mass.

Shelbi found life in Hawaii to go on "island time," a whole different lifestyle from Hughes County. "The slower-paced lifestyle took awhile to get used to," she said.

Hilo, an area of 40,000 people, is not as "touristy" as the rest of Hawaii, and Shelbi found the people nice and friendly, "much like you find in South Dakota."

While the culture, lifestyle and people were easy to adjust to, the environment took a bit longer. The length of the day there changes barely an hour from winter to summer, so Shelbi missed the lack of true seasons.

But Hawaii had its rainy, cooler winters and drier, warmer summers. Shelbi even experienced snow out there on the islands. At 14,000 feet Mauna Kea gets snow which remains on the ground for quite awhile. The Hawaiians can take their pickup trucks up to the summit, fill the beds with snow and return to Hilo to build snowmen on the green grass of their yards.

In January of this year Shelbi, after nearly six years on the islands, transferred to SMA's offices in Cambridge to take over second-shift observations. Her job is essentially the same as it was in Hilo and on the mountain except that she operates the telescope for eight hours in the daytime four days a week, rather than from the summit overnight.

"Our telescope is set up so we can run completely remotely, as long as we have internet access and the right access to computers in Hilo, from anywhere in the world," Shelbi explained.

Shelbi says she is still planning to return to school to pursue her Ph.D., although this six-year deal in Hawaii hasn't been a bad break from the rigors of college study by any means.

"I haven't lost my love of history, and I have been looking at Ph.D. programs for history of science, particularly history of astronomy," she explained. "With a Ph.D. in History of Science, my career goal would be to either teach at the college level or work in a museum."

Her dream job? That would be working at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.

We'd say, don't bet against that happening!

Shelbi says her advice to young women interested in math and science professions would be to take as many courses in those fields as possible in middle school and high school. "And if they love it, stick with it!"

Additional advice is to get involved---compete in the Academic Olympics, go to SDSU's Engineering Expo and experience hands-on applications of science and math, and, perhaps, most important of all, learn how to study before going to college.

PEOPLE NEWS

Heath Heggelund, who came from Watertown last year to become executive director of the Boys and Girls Club of the Capital Area, has resigned that position to return to Watertown. He is the husband of the former Jennifer Schlekeway of Pierre.

Matt Michels of Yankton, who has been tabbed by Lt. Gov. Dennis Daugaard to be his running mate in the general election race for governor/lieutenant governor, has Pierre connections. Michels was born in Pierre, and his wife, the former Karen Lindbloom, is the daughter of Dr. B.O. Lindbloom.

Pierre Area Referral Service has moved to 2520 E. Franklin.

Our sympathy to Larry and Rachel Engbrecht of Pierre and their entire family on the unexpected death of Larry's mother. Violet "Vi" Engbrecht died June 12 at her home in Sioux Falls. Services were held June 16. She is survived by her husband Ben, son Larry in Pierre, and a daughter in Minnesota. Among her grandchildren are the Engbrecht kids from Pierre---Jason and wife Brenda in Pierre, Jeremy and wife Lindsey in Hernando, Miss., and Jessica and husband Tom Graham in Milbank.

Holly (Knox) Perli, husband Nathan, and daughters Olivia and Audrey had an unnerving experience when tornadoes blew through southeastern Minnesota on the evening of June 17. Looking out their back picture window, Nathan saw the winds coming when powerlines at a nearby church snapped. The Perlis huddled in the bathtub in a basement bathroom until the storm had passed. A huge tree in their front yard was totally uprooted, and some shingles were blown off their roof. The strength of the wind blew rain through the sides of windows to dampen the carpet in a couple bedrooms, and damage occurred in the roof and attic because water dripped down light fixtures.

Former Pierre residents Dave and Coleen Jensen are the dorm resident life directors at the new dormitory complex for the Summer University Program at the Crazy Horse Memorial in the Black Hills.

The spring-semester Dean's List at Northern State University included Michelle Monroe (4.0), Elizabeth Leidholt (4.0), Curry Kuehl (4.0), Teresa Bremser (4.0), Joanne Wunderlich, Elizabeth Stewart, Thomas Voeltz, Amy Miles, Mary Holm, Peggy Heermann, Alicyn Even, Terra Burley, Maggie Slaba and Danielle Peters.
